More About John W. Harris
John Harris is a Graduate of University of California at Los Angeles, where he received his B.A. and J.D having served as Managing Editor of the Law Journal. He is admitted to the California State Bar.
John established his law firm in 1980, after an extensive tenure with the Chief Counsel’s Office of the Internal Revenue Services (IRS), where he rose to the level of senior trial attorney, handling Tax Court litigation and prosecuting tax crimes in conjunction with the Department of Justice. In that connection, he coordinated and conducted criminal investigations with various federal agencies, including the FBI, DEA, Secret Service and the IRS. Significantly, he was assigned to the “Strike Force,” where he, in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney’s Office, investigated and prosecuted organized crime.
The firm’s public sector clients include Metro, the County of Los Angeles, Alameda County, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the States of California and New York, CalPERS, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept., Federal Deposit & Insurance Corporation (FDIC) and the L.A. Unified School District. In the private sector, the firm’s clients include multi-national companies such as Coca-Cola Enterprises, Lockheed Martin, TGI Fridays and MBIA. In 2003, Mr. Harris was appointed by the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles as a member of its Equity Oversight Panel (EOP) for the Sheriff’s Department, where he served until the expiration of his five (5) year term in 2008.
Harris has handled complex cases related to advocacy projects on behalf of his clients. He has served on the community advisory board of the AQMD, where he balanced environmental enforcement issues with their economic impact on affected communities.
For public clients such as the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro), Harris handled cases involving land use and related environmental issues.
